14.Two Must Read Articles

Image
FET@KU Forum of English Teacher Educators of Kannur University Two articles which appeared in   online   version of   The Hindu is worth reading: The first one by Maya   Thiagarajan is   entitled   ‘Make teachers matter’.   It reminded me of a significant observation made by Diana Oblinger, the President and CEO of EDUCAUSE   in 2012: Information technology can be a game changer in higher education… information technology enables new models. It can disaggregate and decouple products and processes, allowing the creation of new value propositions, value chains, and enterprises. These new models can help higher education serve new groups of students, in greater numbers, and with better learning outcomes. Please view Ms. Maya’s   article Online http://www.thehindu.com/education/make-teachers-matter/article23465056.ece *********************************************************** In 2013. 8.MOOC on teaching Grammar

Image
FET@KU Forum of English Teacher Educators of Kannur University Though Grammar is central to the teaching of languages most educators are not very comfortable with the teaching of Grammar…There are teachers who focus on grammar as a   set of forms and rules. Such teachers   teach grammar by explaining the forms and rules and then drill students on them. There are   also language teachers who assume that students will absorb grammar rules as they hear, read, and use the language in communication activities.   The Communicative Competence model   of teaching Grammar recognizes that overt grammar instruction helps students acquire the language more efficiently, but it incorporates grammar teaching and learning into the larger context of teaching students to use the language. Research strongly suggests that the most beneficial way of helping students improve their command of grammar in writing is to use students' writing as the basis for discussing gra...

7.Do we teach the revised Taxonomy?

Image
FET@KU Forum of English Teacher Educators of Kannur University Hello everyone, We all know that   despite the introduction of   Outcome Based Learning and Constructivist principles we continue to refer to the Bloom’s Taxonomy. The 1956   version   of the Bloom’s Taxonomy was revised in 2001 as follows: 1956 2001 Evaluation Create Synthesis Evaluate Analysis Analyze Application Apply Comprehension Understand Knowledge Remember But, do we   train our   students to   frame questions   using the revised Taxonomy? Recently when I visited the schools for observation of classes as part of   Practice Teaching,   I realized that   it is quite important to   provide   practice in framing questions based on the Revised Taxonomy. Incidentally, our students are expected to conduct two A...
