7.Do we teach the revised Taxonomy?

FET@KU
Forum of English Teacher Educators of Kannur University

Hello everyone,
We all know that  despite the introduction of  Outcome Based Learning and Constructivist principles we continue to refer to the Bloom’s Taxonomy. The 1956  version  of the Bloom’s Taxonomy was revised in 2001 as follows:
1956
2001
Evaluation
Create
Synthesis
Evaluate
Analysis
Analyze
Application
Apply
Comprehension
Understand
Knowledge
Remember

But, do we  train our  students to  frame questions  using the revised Taxonomy? Recently when I visited the schools for observation of classes as part of  Practice Teaching,  I realized that  it is quite important to  provide  practice in framing questions based on the Revised Taxonomy. Incidentally, our students are expected to conduct two Achievement Tests.

The following table will be helpful:

Objectives
Tasks
Action verbs
Create
Can the student create a new product or point of view?
assemble, construct, create, design, develop, formulate, write
Evaluate
Can the student justify a stand or decision?
appraise, argue, defend, judge, select, support, value, evaluate
Analyze
Can the student distinguish between different parts?
appraise, compare, contrast, differentiate, discriminate, distinguish, examine, experiment, question, test
Apply
Can the student use information in a new way?
choose, demonstrate, dramatize, employ, illustrate, interpret, operate, schedule, sketch, solve, use, write
Understand
Can the student explain ideas or concepts?
classify, describe, discuss, explain, locate, recognize, report, select, translate, paraphrase
